Smith, Charles Frederick (b. 16 DEC 1885, d. 11 MAR 1959)
Note: Charles Smith's marrieage to Edna A. Kippenhan was his second marriage. He had several children from his first marriage, and perhaps that's why John A. Kippenhan approved of his daughters marriage. She was only 15 when she married.

Information provided in a phone interview with Pamela (nee Warner) Krause on May 28, 2001.

Charles Frederick Smith was born in Germany, location is unknown. He immigrated to the US with his father Karl Frederick Rahl and mother Bertha Rahl.He changed his name after his marriage to his first wife (Bertha Rupnow) ended in divorce. He has at least 2 children from that marriage.

Information provided by Keith Blackie (Jan 2010)

Charles Frederick Smith was born Karl Frederick Rahl and was married to Bertha Rumpnow, Dec. 7, 1904. They had at least 2 children, Ervin C. Rahl and Edward Rahl. They were divorced sometime before Aug. 1909.

The family history is that Karl had seen how German immigrants were being treated by some people and after his divorce from Bertha Rupnow, he changed his name and vowed to never speak German again. This held true until his death. In a conversation with Edna as a child, probably in 1978-79, she told me that he (Charles Sr.) had strictly forbade them from speaking German. He insisted that they were Americans now and would speak English.

As a boy, Karl worked as a domestic servant to help support his family.

The family talks very little about family history. Charles tried desperately to hide his germanic roots and most of the family didn't know that he had changed his name. Pearl is the one that gave me that tidbit of information in 1998.

Tradition has it that John Dillinger hid out on the family farm in Racine after the American Bank & Trust robbery in Nov 1933. It has been reported that one of the Smith girls also gave birth to his child.
