Note: Rememberances of Grandpa Delbert Smith

By Rendel Smith - January 1998

My first remembrances of Grandpa date back to about 1924. He and Grandma were living in their own two bedroom bungalow in South Lyon, Michigan. It was on a corner lot surrounded by other homes on the South side but no homes to the North. They made a garden on part of the lot - flowers and vegetables. There was a two car garage between the garden and house in which were kept two For Model T's. One a coupe and the other a pickup with a neat wooden body on the back with a shelf on each side and a small rack mounted on the outside of the shelf. The truck was ideal for hauling bushel baskets of apples, peaches and plums. Grandpa was a friut farmer. It was also suitable for hauling two little kids; my brother and I.

My mother, dad, brother and I were requent visitors. Practically every Sunday afternoon we drove from Howell to South Lyon. Bob and I were sometimes guests for anight or two when our parents wanted to store us while they visisted other places. It was a joy to be there. We slept in the guest room. It was furnished with a double bed with a feather tick.

Grandpa was a patient and kind man. He was bout 5' 6" tall and weighed around 160 pounds I would guess. He had short white hair, butch cut. He was always interested in the Detroit Tigers baseball team and would discuss that team at length with my brother who spent many afternooons listening to the games on the radio. One of the games he played with us as young boys was to see who could name the greatest number of state capitols. He always won - and threw in names of the rivers they were on for goo measure.

He would take us to the orchard on occasion, though I can't remember any constructive work we performed there. I do remember helping him make maple sugar. we hung the buckets, collected the sap and carried it to the big kettle which was well fired underneath and boiling away. At the end of the day, we too home to Grandma the thick syrup for her to continue boiling until she was satisfied with the viscosity. Sometimes she made maple sugar candy.

In the summer evenings, after supper we would go across the street ot Mr. Short's house. He had a sice side yard illuminated with a string of light bulbs where the neighborhood gentlemen would gather for as many games of croquest as they could play before retiring. Occasionaly I got to ply. But not often as the games were taken very seriously by the particpants. Grandmother would ususally sit on her front porch whch wa surnished with confortable wooden rockers and as long as there was daylight, knit, tat or crochet. She was seldom idle.

He loved to smoke cigars. There was usually the smell of cigar smoke about the house. As I grew older, I realized the the odor was not appreciated by Grandma and discovered that, in the winter, his cigar smoking was dispatched outdoors or to the basement in front of the furnace with its door open and the smoke blown into the opening. Certain disposal of the odor, I'll say. In the summmer he was permitted the "run of the house" as she could easily air it out.
