Mengel, Willim (1 Aug 1851 - 16 Apr 1910)

Died, at his home in this village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.) on Tuesday, April 16, 1910, at ten o'clock in the evening, William Mengel, of diabetes.

The deceased was born in Germany Aug. 1, 1851, and came to this country with his parents when but eighteen months old and settled in Jefferson Co., Wis. three miles from the village of Helenville. He moved to Concord about twelve miles from there when twenty years of age on a farm and was married to Miss Anna Hills on Feb. 19, 1874. In the spring of 1878 he came to Clark County and settled on a farm he owned. Last fall he visited for two months with his children in Montana and two months ago he rented his farm and moved to this village in the house he owned, where he died.

The deceased was a man who united sound sense with strong convictions, and a candid outspoken temper, eminently fitted to mold the rude elements of pioneer society into form and consistency, and aid in raising a high standard of citizenship in our growing state. How much this community owes him it is impossible to estimate. He lived nobly and died peacefully at the advanced age of fifty-eight years.

The mourners are: A wife, four daughters, Mrs. J. Hubbard of this village, Mrs. Burton Welsh and Mrs. Albion Welsh of Wibaux, Mont. and Mrs. Henry Wassink of here, and four sons, John, Irving and Roy of Wibaux, Mont., and Albert of this village, and eight sisters and two brothers.

The flowers were many and beautiful, an anchor by the Modern Woodmen, a beautiful bouquet of eastern lilies by the Ryal Neighbors, carnations by the Good Tmplars and carnations by the school children.

The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church on Saturday morning at ten o'clock and his remains buried with the Modern Woodman Honors in the M.E. Cemetery.
