I knew very little about Winifred Smith Mielke Mahnke Roehl except that she
sold real estate in Los Angeles and chased German guys (obviously).

I believe the only contact I ever had with her was in 1936 or 1937 when my
parents moved to LA with Rose and Forrest J tagging along at the last
minute. "Grandma Mahnke" as she was then addressed, chided my folks for
renting a half-duplex at 4216 S. Walton in LA for $35 a month. She could
have found something for much less, she claimed.

Yup, we joined the Okie migration and did the Grapes of Wrath scene for
real. I vaguely remember trying to sleep in a hot tourist cabin with the
door open and the sparse traffic going by in the wee hours.

My folks never talked much about Rose's mother, and indeed may not have
known much about her life and lineage. My mother did recount the departure
from America's Dairyland when they left for the coast. My Dad went in Rose's
house to bid her goodbye and returned to the (I believe) Oakland that had
been groomed for the trip, announcing to my mother that "They're going with
us".

As I said, Grandma Mahnke was already in LA, so we at least had a focal
point upon our arrival. I know there's a picture of GM in the family archive
and I may have it here. I thought my mother gave me the entire early album
but I discovered it had been cannibalized and a good many of those pictures
are currently at the condo in Shelby Township, MI. Thus the picture I
remember is either here or there. I'll look.

Rose and Forrest returned to WI and some months later (winter 1938, I
believe) we returned to Belleville, WI and then on to Detroit. Rose was
living in Belleville in one of "Pa's" houses and raising Forrest who was
only seven years older than I. That would have made him only 10 during the
LA ---> Belleville --->Detroit migration. Eldon was still single then and
married Mary a short time later. Rosemary's date of birth would help to
chronicle that whole time frame.

Betty Bethel (Rosol) Hamilton, age 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1930, the daughter of Charlie and Bessie (Ratche) Rosol. Betty graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg, Oregon where Betty developed many dear friendships and always had a big smile and a warm hug for everyone she met. Betty will be remembered for the enjoyment of a good time, her love of traveling (expecially in her R.V.), gardening, fishing, and playing cards. Within the last year, Betty was able to travel to Costa Rica and also to Yosemite National Park with her family and had the time of her life. She also was proud of her Czechoslovakian heritage. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Forrest Bethel in 1974; second husband, Donald Hamilton in 2000; brother, Keith Rosol; and sister, Annette Rosol.

She is survived by her children, Forrest (Marsha) Bethel of Oceanside, Calif., Patty Bethel of Rio Dell, Calif., Douglas (Guillermina) Bethel of Quail Valley, Calif., and Dan Bethel of Roseburg, Ore.; stepdaughters of Don Hamilton; brother, John (Anna Mae) Rosol of Madison; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Roseburt, Ore., on Friday, Feb 18, 2011, at 12:10 p.m. Inturnment will be held at the Canyonville Cemetery, Canyonville, Ore., sometime this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's name to a charity of the donor's choice.

Oregon -- Mae Bethel, age 97, longtime Oregon resident, died on Saturday, January 19, 1991, at a Madison nursing home. She was born on July 18, 1893, in Highland, Wisconsin, and married Glen Bethel on August 16, 1922. She was a member of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church of Oregon and the VFW Auxlilary Post #9759 of Rockford, Illinois. She is survived by a son, Lee (Cecelia) Bethel of Monona; two daughers, Dona (Sam) McMicken of San Diego, California, and Rae (Jerry) Ambach of Rockford, Illinois; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a brother, Armond Lee of Madison; and two sisters, stella Keyes of Madison, and Bernadette Lee of San Diego, California. She was preceded in death by her husband, glen; a granddaughter, Carolyn Bethel; three brothers, Fred, Louis and Bob Lee; and a sister, Edith Frye. Funeral services will be held at Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church, 651 North Main Street, Oregon, at 11:00 A.M., on Monday January 21, 1991, with Father Tony Schumacher, officiating.
