Farmed 4 1/2 miles NW of Greenwood, Clark Co., WI. He also was a carpenter by trade. He built the second church of the Congregation which is now called Immanuel United Church of Christ, Greenwood, WI. After the new brick church was built the wooden church was used for Sunday school and vacation bible school.
Note: August Karl Franz, the son of August and Louise (Arnholter) Franz, was born Oct. 28, 1861 in Wisconsin. Jan. 8, 1891, he married Alwina, the daughter of Ludwig and Charlotte (Strate) Noah who was born Dec. 10, 1871. She was also Wisconsin born.
August and Alwina had seven children, five sons and two daughters. The oldest six are pictured above. Their first born was a son, Friedrich August, who arrived that fall, Oct. 27, 1891. He was christened two months later, Dec. 20, 1891 and confirmed at the Immanuel Evangelical & Reformed Church, Apr. 13, 1916, when he was twenty-five years old.
Dec. 17, 1893, their second son, Calvin was born. He was christened Feb. 11, 1894 and was confirmed the age of fifteen, at an Easter service, Apr. 17, 1908.
A third son, Adolf Ludwig, was born Mar. 10, 1896, christened Apr. 26, 1896, and confirmed Mar. 25, 1910.
Their first daughter, Alma Agnes, was born Mar. 26, 1899, christened May 14, 1899, and confirmed Mar. 27, 1913, just one day after her fourteenth birthday.
Otto Arthur was born in the depth of a Wisconsin winter, Jan. 17, 1903. He was christened as springtime was about to arrive, Mar. 15, 1903. He was confirmed in the Christian faith, May 20, 1917.
The youngest son, Herold Gilbert, was born May 28, 1905, and was christened in the heat of the summer, July 23, 1905. When he was twelve years old, he was also confirmed at Immanuel.
The baby of the family and second daughter, Leona Ruth, was born after the harvest, Sept. 28, 1911. Apr. 2, 1926, she, like all of her siblings confessed her belief in God during a confirmation ceremony.
Feb. 1, 1932, August Karl Franz died and was buried in a hand dug grave, just East of the Church where he'd sung many well-known hymns. Nearly seven years later, Jan. 21, 1939, Alwina was laid to rest beside him.
Obituary of August K. Franz
August K. Franz, oldest son of August and Louise Franz was born October 28th, 1861 in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. He spent his childhood and early youth in and about the Town of Herman. In 1881 Mr. Franz came to Clark County. Two years later in the spring of 1883, he went back to that town returning again to Clark County in the fall of that year and making his home here since.
On January 8, 1891, he was united in marriage with Alvina Noah. They settled on their present farm where he resided until death. Beside farming he did carpenter work until 1905. Mr. Franz has been ailing for about a year and a half and passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, February 1, 1932. He leaves to morn his death, his widow, five sons, Fred, Adolph, Otto and Harold of Sidney, Montana; Calvin of the Town of Longwood and two daughters, Alma (Mrs. Otto Fravert), Town of Warner and Leona at home and five grand children. Besides these he leaves to mourn two brothers and two sisters, William, Henry, Mrs. Frank Able, Greenwood, Wis. and Mrs. John Kppenhan of Appleton. One sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Franz lived in this community for over 50 years. He was well known, enjoying a large circle of friends and acquaintences.
Funeral services were held from the West Side Immanuel Reformed church at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev P. Franzmeier officating. The body was laid to rest in the West Side Cemetery.
Those from away who were here for the funeral were Adolph Franz of Sidney, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Simon Noah and two sons, of Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. John Kippenhan of Appleton; Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mattes of Thorp and Carl and Otto Arnhoelder of Sheboygan.

OBITUARY OF MRS. JOHN KIPPENHAN
Mrs. John (Mina) Kippenhan, daughter of Carl and Louisa Franz, was born June 11, 1863 in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, Wis. At the age of 20 years she came to Clark County with her parents.
On March 23, 1887 she was united in marriage with John Kippenhan. To this union 13 children were born.
Mr. and Mrs. Kippenhan moved on a farm in the Town of Mead and lived there until 1924, when the moved to Appleton, Wis.
Mrs. Kippenhan was well known throughout the community and enjoyed many friends and acquaintances. She was active in church and Ladies Aid work.
She was ailing for some time but her death came suddenly on Saturday evening, May 3, 1941. One daughter, Helen, preceded her in death in 1931.
Survivors are the widower, five daughters, Mrs. Lydia Wolf, Pueblo, Colo. Hilda and Mrs. Emma Wickesberg, Appleton, Wis. Cilla, Neillsville, Wis. and Louise, Black River Falls, Wis. seven sons, Theodore, Edwin, August, Arthur and Carl, Greenwood, Wis. John and Roland, Appleton 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the West Side Church, with Rev. Franzmeier officiating, assisted by the Rev. Guenther of Appleton.
The pallbearers were William and John Abel, William Awe, August Schwarze, Alfred Noah and Wm. Toburen.
A choir from the Indian School at Neillsville and the following ladies sang special songs: Mrs. Edwin Steiger, Otto Reineking, Norbert Kuester, Arthur Schwarze, Albert Liebzeit and Willard Stafford.

Mrs. Frank H. Abel, 73, died yesterday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laube, in Colby. She had been visiting there for the last week. Funeral services were held in her home, 5 ½ miles southwest of Greenwood, and at West Side Evangelical and Reformed Church, with burial in the West Side Cemetery. Mrs. Abel, the former Louisa Franz, was born Dec 6 1875 in Sheboygan, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Franz. She married Frank Abel Sept 29 1897. Following their marriage the couple moved to their present home and have lived there ever since. Her husband survives her.Also surviving Mrs. Abel are three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Carl (Laura) Laube, Colby; Mrs. Walter (Ella) Elmer, Milwaukee; Mrs. Adolph (Florine) Wendt, Owen; and Otto and Adolph Abel, both of Greenwood. Two sons died in infancy. One sister and three brothers preceded her in death.

Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) ? Mrs. Frank H. Abel, 73, a resident of Greenwood for 67 years, died yesterday morning about 6:10 o?clock at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laube, in Colby. She had been visiting there for the last week.

The body will lie in state at the Schiller Funeral Home until Sunday morning. Burial will be made in the West Side Cemetery.

Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) Mr. and Mrs. Frank Abel, Sunday afternoon and evening, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.. The Rev. J.C. Klingeberger of West Side Reformed Church, Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), offered prayer at dinner served to 115 relatives and friends of the couple.
Mrs. Abel, the former Louisa Franz, was born Dec. 6, 1876, at Sheboygan. She moved to Greenwood with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Franz when she was 6 years of age. Frank Abel was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Abel Sr., Jan. 1, 1874 at West Bend. The family moved to Greenwood shortly afterwards.
Mr. and Mrs. Abel were married at the home of the latters parents in the Town of Warner, Sept. 30, 1897. The Rev. John Schmalz read the service. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Franz, Greenwood, who attended the couple, were present at the golden wedding observance Sunday. The Abels moved to their present home after their marriage and have lived there ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Abel have five children, all of whom attended the reception. All of their grandchildren except one, Walter Elmer Jr., Milwaukee, were present.
The children and grandchildren who were present for the event included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laube and children, Kenneth, Lorrain and Janet., Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Abel and children, Harold, Albert, Lloyd, Joan and Yvonne, Greenwood.; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elmer and daughters, Delores and Shirley, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Wendt and children, Gealdine and Carol, and Dennis, Owen.
The Abels received numerous gifts and congratulatory messages as well as a purse of money

GREENWOOD, CLARK COUNTY--Frank Henry Abel, a resident of this area many year, died Monday, June 29, 1953, at 10 p.m. , at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Laube, Colby. He had been in poor health since December, when he underwent surgery.

Greenwood - Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rinka funeral Home in Greenwood for Mrs. Theresa M. Bolf, 22, of 706 E. Doege St., Marshfield. She died at 9:13 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfiled of head injuries suffered in a two car collision Sunday night on State Highway 13 in northwestern Marshfield.
Officiating at Wednesday's services will be the Rev. Robert B. Houston, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:30 p.om today.
The former Theresa Sloniker was born May 11, 1954, in Marshfield and received her eduation in the Greenwood Grade and High School. She was employed by the Stewart Cheese Factory for five years and at the time of her death was working at the Root Beer stand in Marshfield.
On April 21, 1971, at Neillsville, she was married to Dennis Bolf. He survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Heather, at home; her parents, Mrs. Lyle (Bonnie) Hardrath, Marshfield, and Ed Sloniker, Grenwood; three sisters, Miss Laura and Miss Peggy Sloniker and Mrs Dan (Kathy) Abuman, all of Marshfield; a half sister, Miss Heidi Hardrath, Marshfield, and her grandparents, Mrs. Floyd Updyke, Greenwood and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Sloniker, also of Greenwood.
