Theodore Humke was very hard of hearing after being very ill with the flu of 1918. He farmed near Henry Humke in rural Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin. Theodore (Ted) took two heaping tablespoons of sugar each night before he went to bed. He loved politics and was a follower of Robert LaFollette of the Progressive Party in Wisconsin. He, along with Albert Liebzeit started the Warner Mutual Insurance Co. Theodore also was an adjuster and officer of the Warner Township Mutual Insurance Co.

Theodore Henry Humke, 91, lifelong resident of Greenwood, died April 28 in Neillsville, where he had resided at Memorial Home since 1966.

Mr. Humke, son of Henry and Anna Kippenhan Humke, was born November 1, 1880 in the Town of Warner. He was married March 31, 1903 to Adeline Fisher in LaCrosse. They settled on a farm northwest of Greenwood. Mrs. Humke died March 29, 1953.

Mr. Humke was a member of the Immanuel United church of Christ and had held various church offices. He had helped organize the Warner Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was president and adjuster of the organization for many years. He was chairman and clerk of Warner Township and clerk of the Decker School.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Francis (Irene) Schweinler of Windsor, Mrs. Fred (Rose) Timmler of Loyal, Mrs. Louis (Cora) Slock of Eau Claire, and Mrs. Willard (Vera) Stafford of Milwaukee; two sons, Harold of Nekoosa and Everett Humke of Rochester, Minn; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and a brother George Humke of Greenwood.

Funeral services were held Saturday from Immanuel United Church of Christ. The Rev. Pacifico Carmarin officiated and burial was made in the West Side Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Steiger, Arvin Leibzeit, Norman Liegzeit, Delmar Toburen, Arno Miller, and Darrel Horn.

The Immanuel mixed choir sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "He Hideth My Soul" accompanied by Mrs. Alvin Albert.

Humke, Adeline (1880-1953)

Greenwood, Clark County. Funeral services for Mrs. Theodore Humke, 73, who died Sunday, March 29, 1953, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the West Side Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. Charles Koch will officiate and burial will be made in the West Side Cemetery.

The body is reposing at the Schiller Funeral Home.

Mrs. Humke, the former Adeline Fischer, was born Jan 29, 1880, in La Crosse, where she received her education. Her marriage to Theodore Humke took place March 31, 1903, at LaCrosse. After their marriage they settled on a farm northwest of Greenwood. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of the West Side Church.

Survivors include her husband, five daughters, Mrs. P. H. Exther Franzmeier, New Albin, Iowa, Mrs. Francis (Irene) Schweinler, Mosinee, Mrs. Fred (Rose) Timmler, Greenwood, Mrs. Louis (Cora) Slock, Eau Claire and Mrs. Willard (Vera) Stafford, Milwaukee, two sons, Harold, Nekoosa, and Everett, La Crosse. 14 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Jack Stieger, La Crosse.

A daughter, a son, Lt. Herbert Humke who was killed in action during World War II, and a brother preceded her in death.

Arthur Humke Dies

Arthur LTheodore Humke, 72, a life long resident of Greenwood, died shortly before noon May 31, as a result of a fall from the hay mow Monday afternoon.

Mr. Humke was born April 29, 1888 in the Town of Warner. He was married to Laura Noah on October 2, 1913. They lived all their married life on a farm four miles northwest of Greenwood. He was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder.

Survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Bernelda) Liebzeit, and Mrs. John (Loriena) Lindner, two sons, Eldore and Emer, all of Greenwood; three sister, Mrs. Paul (Helene) Rossman of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Meda Decker and Mrs. William (Alma) Steiger, all of Greenwood, and two brothers, Theodore Humke and George Humke of Greenwood.

Funeral services for Mr. Humke were held Friday afternoon at the Immanuel United Church of Christ. The Rev. Orval Egbert officated. Burial was made in the West Side Cemetery. Pallbearers were Albert Fravert, Alvin Brick, Theodore Hium, John Zimmer, William Goeke, and Hubert Kuehn.

On Thursday evening at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Noah, of the West Side, occurred the marriage of their only daughter Laura L. to Mr. Arthur T. Humke. Both young people are of prominent West Side families and very popular among the younger people of the community.

The wedding was a very elaborate affair, including many beautiful decorations artistically draped about the rooms of the home. All relatives and numerous friends were present to join in the reception after the wedding.

The ceremony took place at two o'clock Thursday afternoon, Rev. Saewert pronouncing the solemn vows. The bride was attended by the Misses Ella Humke and Hilda Kippenhan and the groom by Messrs. George Humke and Alfred Noah. Both young people are lifelong residents of the West Side (Greenwood, Clark County), and the recipients of many pretty and useful wedding presents.

They will make their home on the groom's farm. The Gleaner joins in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Humke many happy year of wedded life.

Greenwood - Mrs. Arthur (Laura) Humke, 82, of Greenwood, Clark County, died early Saturday morning Sept. 18, 1971, in her sleep at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Pacifico Camarin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be made in the West Side Cemetery here. Visitation may be made at the Hill Funeral Home from Wednesday afternoon until 11 a.m. Thursday, and then at the church.

Mrs. Humke, the former Laura Louise Noah, was born Oct 26, 1888, in the town of Mead. She was married there Oct 2, 1912, to Arthur T. Humke, who preceded her in death May 31, 1960.

After their marriage they operated a farm on Route 3, Greenwood, and she had since resided there.

She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and its Women's Guild.

Survivors include two sons, Eldore and Elmer, both of Greenwood; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Bernelda) Liebziet, and Mrs. John (Lorena) Lindner, both of Greenwood; and seven grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Irvine, 91, Greenwood, died on Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Saint Josephs Hospital, Marshfield. Visitation will be held at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Greenwood, on Thursday, July 3, one hour prior to an 11 a.m. funeral service. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jim Gruber, John Gruber, Todd Wetzel, Rick Rogstad, Martin Wetzel, Randy Rogstad, Fredric Wetzel, and Rodney Rogstad.

Dorothy Loretta Vollrath was born on May 15, 1912, in the town of Warner, to Frederick W. and Anna [Schoettler] Vollrath. She was raised on the family farm and educated in the Greenwood area, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1930. She attended Stevens Point Normal School for one year. She married Quinton Irvine on March 26, 1932, in Greenwood. They farmed in the town of Warner. She later finished her second year of education by attending night school and summer school. She taught in the rural schools for many years. They sold their farm in 1969 and bought a smaller farm just west of Greenwood. Her husband died on June 4, 1977, and she remained living at home until the time of her death. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its Womens Guild, and had many interests, but especially enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, reading, puzzles and gardening.

Survivors include one son, Victor [Marion] Irvine, Grafton; three daughters, Joan [Tim] Gruber, Greenwood, Jacqualine [Bob] Rogstad, Greenwood, and Dorene Wetzel, Jackson; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Anna Vollrath.

Preceding in death were her parents; her husband; on granddaughter, Julie Ann Gruber; three sisters, Verna Abel, Erma Seibold, and Beatrice Liebzeit; and one brother, Phillip Vollrath.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct 8 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Greenwood, Clark County, for George Humke, 97, Greenwood. Humke died Sunday, Oct 4, 1987 at 11:20 at Neillsville Memorial Home, where he had been a resident since 1984.

Rev. John Tschudy will officate at the 1 p.m. ceremony, with burial in the Westside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren; Dennis Humke, Frank Horn, Kurt Humke, Todd Humke, Ray Toburen and Bill Toburen.

George Humke was born July 31, 1890 in the town of Warner to Henry and Anna (Kipp3nhan) Humke. On Nov 8, 1916, he and Lelah Sheets were married in the town of Warner. He was employed as a cheesemaker and later ran the family farm. He and his wife farmed in the town of Warner until 1964, when they moved to the city of Greenwood. His wife died Jan. 17, 1973. On Aug 30, 1985, he married Borghild Thiel at the Neillsville Memorial Home. She survives.

Mr. Humke was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and served on the consistory. He had served as a supervisor and chairman of the town of Warner and was a director for Clark Electric Cooperative for 12 years.

Survivors include his wife, Borghild; four sons, George Jr. of Sterling, Ill., Irvin and Paul of Greenwood, and Harvey of Sister Bay; Three daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Ruth) Toburen, Greenwood; Mrs. (Bob (Verona) Jackson, Sparta; and Mrs. Glenn (Jeanette) Horn, Thorp; 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, two grandchildren, three borthers and four sisters.

Greenwood - Mrs. George Humke, 76, of Greenwood, Clark County, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan 23, 1973 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services for her will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Greenwood. The Rev. Pacifico Camarin, pastor, will officate and burial will be made in the West Side cemetery at Greenwood.

Visitations may be made at the Hill Funeral Home in Greenwood beginning Friday afternoon and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The former Lelah Sheets was born on a farm near Columbus Grove, Ohio, April 18, 1896. She came to the Greenwood area with her parents at the age of 4 years, and graduated from the Greenwood High School with the class of 1913. Four members of that class celebrated the golden anniversary of graduation 10 years ago. She taught school before her marriage nov. 8, 1916, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ at Greenwood, to George Humke, who survives her.

After their marriage they farmed on the Humke homestead in the town of Warner until 1964, when they purchased a house in the city of Greenwood.

She was a member of Immanuel Church in Greenwood and its Women's Guild for 14 years, and as its vice president for two years. The Humkes were honored on the golden anniversary of their wedding in November of 1966.

Other suvivors include three daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Ruth) Toburen, Greenwood; Mrs. Robert (Verona) Jackson, Sparta; and Mrs. Glenn (Jeanette) Horn, Thorp; four sons, Irvin and Paul, both of Greenwood; Harvey, Green bay; and George Humke Jr., Sterling, Ill; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Evangeline Diaz, Enid, Okla.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Awe, Heinrich (Henry) F. J. (b. 5 JAN 1864, d. 1 FEB 1936)

Henry Awe was born in he sae of New York on January 5, 1864, the son of John and Sophie Awe. When he was two years old he came wih his parents to live in New Holsein, Wisconsin. Here he was confirmed and received as a member of the Lutheran church. In the year 1885 he came to Clark County. On August 29, 1886 he was married to Friederika Loos. The ceremony was performed in New Holstein, Wis. To this union were born six children. In November 1886 the young couple came to Clark County and settled on a farm in the town of Green Grove, which Mr. Awe had purchased the previous year. This has always served as their home. His wife preceded him in death on January 31, 1929.

On January 1, 1898 Mr. Awe became a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church. In January 1926 he was elected to the office of Elder and has since held that office. He also was director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintences.

Though Mr. Awe was ailing for some time, his death came suddenly on Saturday evening, February 1, 1936. He had reached the age of 72 years and 26 days. On January 5th of this year he celebrated his birthday with his children at the home of his son Wilhelm.

Those who remain to mourn his death are two sons, Wilhelm and Arthur, of the Town of Green Grove; four daughters, Emma (Mrs. Henry Burmeister), Owen, Wis., Lydia, Town of Green Grove; Maratha, (Mrs. Theodore Kippenhan), Greenwood, Wis, and Elizabeth (Mrs. Henry Voigtlander), Curtiss, Wis. Besides these he leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. Sophie Calbum of Nevada and thirteen grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Immanual Reformed Church, Rev. P.H. Franzmeier officiating, and the body was laid to rest in the West Side cemetery.

The pallbearers were Wilhelm and Arthur Awe, Theodore Kippenahn, Henry Voigtlander, Alvin Kippenhan and George Burmeister.

Henry Awe was born in New York, on Jan 5,1864 and was the son of John & Sophie Awe.
In 1866 he came to New Holstein, Wi with his parents where he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church there. He practiced his trade, carpentry, in Calumet Co before his marriage.

On Aug 29,1886 in New Holstein, Wi he was married to Charlotte Fredericka Loos, daughter of John and Jakobine (Kuhn) Loos, born on Nov 26,1865 in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co, Wi

.Since several of his closest kin were living in Clark Co, WI.; in November of 1886 the young couple came to Clark County and settled on a farm in the town of Green Grove, WI, which Henry Awe had purchased the year before.

It was the NW 1/4 of Sec.31,town 28,Rt 1,West from the Wisconsin Central RR Co, and they soon cut down 5 acres of woods on the NW ,corner of his 40 acres. They built a log house, and a temporary stable (which was replaced with a timber frame barn in 1890)
To this marriage was born six children, William born 19 Jun 1887,Emma born 1 Jan 1889, Lydia born 7 Oct 1890, Martha born 5 Jul 1893,Arthur b 20 Jul 1895, and Elizabeth, born 21 May,1901

A sawmill was built in the early 1890's,it was sold, and another built in 1904-05 (which still stands. In 1904 a barn was raised ! and extended. The brick veneer dwelling was built in 1887 and enlarged in 1912. An additional 200 acres was purchased, and an additional 80 acres acquired in 1915. In 1923,the farm was divided with part being taken over by son, William, and part taken over by son, Arthur, the present owner.

Their home was a Christian one and they were members first, of Peace Reformed Church in the town of Longwood and later, in 1898, when it united with Immanuel Reformed Church of the West Side. In Jan 1926 he was elected to the office of Elder and held that office all his life. He also was a director of the Farmers Merchants Bank

Charlotte Fredericke Awe died in 1929.About five years before her death she had suffered a stroke but had recovered partially. Then in March 1926 she again was prostrated and from that time she was an invalid, but attended services at her church whenever possible. She was taken very sick about a week before her death and she died on Jan 31,1929 at the age of 63 years,2 months, and 5 days.

It was said she was a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor, and had a kind personality. At the time of her death she was survived by her husband, all her children, twelve grandchildren, a brother, Rev Wm Loos of Duluth, Mn, three sisters, Mrs Jacob Bast, Mrs Christopher Bast, both of Rockfield, Wi and, Mrs Jacobine Loos of Milwaukee, Wi. They are both buried in the West United Church of Christ West Cemetery, Warner Twp., Clark Co, Wi.

Henry Awe was ill for some time before his death on Feb 1,1936 at age of 72 years and 26 days. He had just celebrated his birthday on Jan 5th of that year, with all his children at the home of his son, William.

At the time of his death he was survived by:
his children William/Wilhelm,Arthur,Emma,Lydia,Martha and Elizabeth: one sister,Mrs Sophie Calbaum of Nevada,and thirteen grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: William Awe,Arthur Awe( sons), Theodore Kippenham, Henry Voiglander (son in laws) and George Burmeister (nephew)

William Awe b June 19,1887 Green Grove, Wi farmed all his life on the family farm

He married Louise Voightlander, on Dec 13,1923.

At the time of his death on 25 Jun 1957 he was survived by Louise: sons, Calvin of Milwaukee, and Arnold, at home, his brother, Arthur and his four sisters Lydia of Owen; Mrs Emma Burmeister, Withee; Mrs Martha Kippenhan (Ted) of Owen; and Mrs Elizabeth Voighlandler (Henry) of Curtiss.

The Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arthur Heinrich Awe died Dec 25,1989

His wife,Lynda Stock Awe's obituary reads as follows:

Mrs Lynda Ave,92,formerly of Greenwood,Clark Co,died Wednesday,July 24,1991 at Colonial Living Center, Colby Wisconsin. .

Services were held at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Greenwood,Wi and she was buried in Westside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Awe,Michael Awe,
Douglas Awe,Jeffrey Awe,Thomas Awe, and James Serocki Jr.

Lnyda Stock Awe was b 3 Aug 1898 in ManitowocCounty,Wi to August & Wilhelmina (Goeke)Stock.She received her education at Manitowoc schools.

She married Arthur Awe on March 28,1944 in Decorah,Iowa. After their marriage they farmed in the town of Green Grove until 1972 when they retired and moved to Greenwood.
She entered the Colonial Living Center April 22,1985. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Church

She was survived at the time of her death by: son,Henry Awe,of Owen; and six grandchildren. Lynda died July 24,1991.. She was preceeded in death by her husband,her parents,two brothers,and fours sisters.
