Note: In 1892/93 the Hutchinson Cooperage Company of Peoria, Illinois, had a heading and stave mill on the north bank of Rock Creek, where they sawed staves and made heading from basswood, paying from $1.75 to $2.25 per cord for 34 inch bolts and employed about seventy-five men. The company applied for a $1,000.00 bonus from the city and got it.
In 1900, a Heading Mill was built by Kippenhan and Palms and was first put in operation in June 1900, and the following year, Mr. Palms sold his interest to Chris Kippenhan, and the mill was then known, until 1905, as the Kippenhan Heading Mill, and which suffered a great loss by fire on Monday, June 11, 1904.
Shortly after one o'clock on this day, smoke was discovered issuing from the dry kiln which was full of heading being dried for finishing and in spite of the heroic work of firemen and volunteers and assistance from Loyal, the flames devastated property to the value of $10,000 to $15,000 with no insurance. Shortly after the fire, he built a new dry kiln, but the loss was such a heavy one that he could not regain his footing and was forced to file bankruptcy, even though generous subscriptions were given by our citizens. In February 1905, the business went into the hands of a receiver, and by whom the business was conducted for the benefit of its creditors until January 10, 1906.
GREENWOOD HEADING MILL
A company composed of John Shanks as President, E. Bowen, Secretary and Treasurer, Thomas Fahey, Director, and W. H. Palms, Manager, organized and were incorporated under the title of the "Greenwood Heading and Lumber Company." In the Spring of 1906, this company bought the saw mill of Mr. Kippenhan which stood on the bank of the Black River west of town, moving the machinery to the present site and putting a new building for same. The principle industry of this mill is the manufacture of barrel heading, and from which it derives its name. The company does a general retail lumber business, besides making window and door frames, and handling sash, door and all kinds of interior finishing's, they also do custom sawing.

Into Bankruptcy
Ch. Kippenhan was at Neillsville Saturday and began proceedings entering voluntary bankruptcy. The liabilites are estimated at $13,000 while his assets are around $10,000. He states that two years ago he was worth $30,000 and that the fire of two years ago crippled him so he has not been able to pull out. Others, however, claim that it has been the poor stave market, together with a goo generous scale on Mr. Kippenhan's part when buying bolts and getting culled too closely when selling staves that largely accounts for his misfortune. The loss by fire, which amounted to somewhere between $8,000 and $10,000, was a blow that could not be recovered from. It is a hard blow to Mr. Kippenhan and to the town for he has paid out large sums of money both to the farmers of surrounding territory and for labor, which in turn has been spent in town. It is to be hoped -- and with some encouragement -- that matters will be so adjusted that the mill can start up in due time either under Mr. Kippenhan's or some other party's management, and the busyness be continued.
=======
He was a businessman and owned a head and stave mill in Greenwood. It caught fire and burned down, and wiped him out financially. In 1910, he packed up and went to Richland Co., Montana with is family, including married children and spouses. They settled in Sydney and Girard, Richland Col, Montana.

Ch. Kippenhan is building up quite a little town all by himself. Now he has a crew of carpenters and masons laying a wall and putting on a large addition to the Borseth building he purchased last summer. The new part will be 18 by 24 and will be two stories high. When done it will make a neat and good sized house. Gleaner 9-7-1900

Obituary of Christ Kippenhan
Christ Kippenhan, son of Adam Kippenhan and his wife, Margaret N. E. Richter, was born on April 23, 1854 near Kewaskum, Wis. He died at 10:30 A.M., December 4, at his home in Sidney, Montana, following a short illness from pneumonia. He was married to Anna Margaret Klumb in 1876. To this union were born six children, Henry, who died in infancy; Matilda Baumann of Girard; John of Sidney, Idena Decker of Girard; Clara Vollrath of Kent, Wash; and Oscar of Sidney. He also leaves to mourn his passing 17 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister and two brothers. The latter relatives now reside in Wisconsin.
After his marriage he engaged in the hotel and livery buisness at Kewaskum, Wis., and later moved to Greenwood, in the same state, where he engaged in the lumber buisness and manufacture of barrel bottoms and staves. The factory was destroyed by fire in 1905. He came to Montana in 1910 taking up a homestead in the Girard community.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 8th, at 2:30 P.M. in Trinity English Lutheran church, the pastor, Rev. B.G. Mueller, basing his funeral sermon on the words, "Lord now lettest thou they servant depart in peasce according to they word, for mine eyes have seen they salvation." It was a source of considerable satisfaction for Mr. Kippenhan, the pastor stated, to see the completeion of Trinity Lutheran church's new church building, since he was one of the organizers of the local congregation, many of the first services in years gone by having been conducted in his home, both in the Girard community and also during the first years of his residence in Sidney. Trinity church feels the passing of one of its most devoted members.
