GATHERED TO SAY FAREWELL
Several friends of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Decker gathered at their home Sunday evening to make a social call and to bid them farewell and to wish them good luck and prosperity in the new field for which tey departed Monday morning. A very pleasant evening, considering the fact that they were so soon to lose so hospitable a couple, was very pleasntly passed. Mr. and Mrs. Decker, accompanied by Chris Kippenhan and August Bauman, left Monday morning for their new home in Montana. Their effects of stock, machinery, etc., amounting to three carloads, was also shipped Monday. (Greenwood Gleaner, January 27, 1910)
IN HEAD END COLLISION
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Decker, Chris Kippenhan, August Bauman and John Syth, who left this city the week last on Monday morning, were in a head-on collision with a passenger train while about two miles east of Wilmer, Minn. Aside from being badly shaken up and more or less frightened, that was all the damage that was done to them, but the stock pretty badly used up. Mr. Kippenhan and Mr. Syth each had one of their horses killed and Mr. Baumann had twelve of his chickens killed, caused by one of the horses falling on them. In the car back of theirs there were twelve head of horses belonging to other parties, eight of which were killed outright. The cars were so badly broken up that everything had to be taken on to Wilmer to be reloaded except Mr. Syth's which was in such bad shape that it had to be reloaded where the collision occurred. (Greenwood Gleaner, February 3, 1910)
Biography
Although christened Ludwig, he was always called Louis. In 1901 he married Adina Kippenhan and in 1910 they, with their then 3 children, moved to eastern Montana as part of the honyocker homestead movement, extablishing themselves on 320 acres of land near the small community of Girard, Montana in what was then Dawson County. After 'proving up' the land as required by the Homestead Act, they filed for ownership in January of 1914, the same year their 4th child, Henry Christopher, was born. Struggling to make a living from dry-land farming in an area with an average annual rainfall of less than 12", they lost the farm when Louis suffered a 'paralytic stroke' in 1918 and was unable to continue farming. That year their 5th and last child, Irvin, was born, By 1920, according to U.S. Census records, Louis was back farming on his own farm. They had purchased Adina's parents farm, when the Kippenhans retired and moved to Sidney, Montana. In the fall of 1936, they had had enough of the struggle to make ends meet, sold the farm, and moved to St. Ignatius, Montana where they lived with their eldest daughter, Celesta, and her husband for about 2 years. In 1939, they moved to Pablo, Montana and sometime later to Polson, Montana. Louis passed away in 1951 and is burried in the Ronan City Cemetery east of Ronan, Montana.

Two Victims Succumb to Deadly Germs
Sayle Ranchers Die from Eating Cold Canned Spinach.
Funeral services were held in Broadus on Monday afternoon for the Late Lee Anderson at the Broadus community church with the Rev. John Duncan of Coalwood officiating.
Lee Anderson died last Thursday night in an ambulance within 10 miles of Miles City, a tragic victim of botuline poisoning. On Tuesday noon Lee Anderson and Arthur Decker had a cold lunch at the newly purchased Anderson ranch on Bradshaw Creek near Sayle. Included in the lunch was some home canned spinach. Both men were taken violently ill on Wednesday, and on Thursday a doctor from the Otter CCC Camp was called.
Dr. Brody of the camp immediately upon seeing the men sent for serum to counteract the poisoning and the serum was delivered to Otter by airplane. The toxin had advanced to a stage where nothing could be done for the men but in a last hope they were placed in an ambulance and taken to Miles City.
Anderson died in the ambulance when within 10 miles of that city and Decker died two hours after reaching the hospital.
Arthur Decker was buried in Miles City on Sunday with A.F. & A.M. Yellowstone Lodge No.26 in charge of the services assisted by members of the Masonic Lode of Broadus, of which lodge Mr. Decker was a member.
Mr. Decker was born in Greenwood, Wis., January 29, 1886, and came to Montana in 1921. He is survived by three brothers, Alfred Decker of Passic, Wyo., Louis Decker of Gerard, Mont., Gustave Decker of Snohomish, Wash., and by two sisters, Augusta Franz and Clara Abel, both of Greenwood, Wisconsin.
Pallbearers at the Decker funeral were Albert W. Heidel, Hr. R. Straiston, A. O. Pemberton, S. A. Holt Jr., W. H. Deffenbought and W. H. Goodspeed.
Lee Anderson was born in New Mexico and came to Montana when a small boy. He was 33 years of age at the time of his death. He is survived by the widow, two brothers and two sisters. Pallbearers at the funeral were Rex Schwind, Fred Yonkee, George Smith, Calvin Thex, Max Drocker and Buster Trussler.
Because of the conflicting stories that have been printed concerning the fatal illness of Lee Anderson and Arthur Decker, Mrs. Lee Anderson has prepared the following statement to tell the facts of the poisoning.
Mr. Anderson with the assistance of Mr. Decker, was moving household goods to the Cann ranch on Bradshaw Creek, which he recently purchased. He had not set up a cook stove and the two lunched on cold home canned spinach and other foods on Tuesday. They left immediately after lunch to et another load of furniture and when Mrs. Anderson came to the place from her school on Indian Creek she found the food on the table and being hungry helped herself but took only a bite of the spinach as it tasted queer. She immediately emptied the spinach and when the men returned a short time later supper was prepared after which Mr. Anderson took Mr. Decker home.
Mr. Anderson first noticed his eyes feeling queer about 9 o'clock Wednesday morning but as he ad a trip to make went on and returned that evening. He complained of seeing double and having a headache, but went to bed saying he was going to Sheridan to see a doctor if he was not better by morning. When morning came he did not feel able to make the trip and sent Mrs. Anderson after the CCC camp doctor who immediately sent for serum and supplies for treatment of botulism poisoning. Mrs. Anderson phoned in to the Love Motor Company at Miles City for the medicine to be sent out by airplane, which was done.
Arthur Decker became ill about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. He had some stomach trouble and vomited some that day. On Thursday morning Pete Simpson, who lives on Mr. Decker's ranch, went after two nephews, August Decker and Emil Franz. When it was learned that Dr. Broody was attending Mr. Anderson, they had him see Mr. Decker also and when the ambulance from the CC camp arrived Mr. Decker was removed to the Anderson home where serum and other treatment was administered to both. The medicine arrived shortly after 23 o'clock in the afternoon and Dr. Brody assisted by one of the CCC boys and Mrs. Anderson worked until nearly 6 o'clock that evening and did all that was humanly possible for the stricken men. About 7 o'clock or as soon as the stretchers were made ready, Dr. Brody started with them on the trip to the hospital at Miles City, but Mr. Anderson died when about 10 miles out of Miles city while Mr. Decker lived about two hours after reaching the hospital. The doctors were anxious over the case of Mrs. Anderson who they feared would later show symptoms of poisoning from the mouthful she took so she was persuaded to spend the night in the Miles City hospital to be under observation but as she showed no symptoms and after 60 hours had elapsed, she felt perfectly normal, it was concluded the poisoning would not take effect on her.
Friends of the two men wish to express thanks and appreciation to Dr. Brody for his efforts on behalf of the two stricken men.

WHAT MOM TOOK
Most often when we think of Mom
we think of what she's given.
The softness of a loving touch,
a gentle guide for living;
A nightly Tip-toe in a room.
An understanding look.
But sometimes when I think of Mom
I think of what she took.
She took those kindergarten tears,
and kept them all inside.
She took the hands that longed to hold
her child and not to let go,
Used them to push her child along
The way, to thrive and grow.
Took time to do some other things
Like sew and clean and cook,
And never thought to ask for thanks
for all the things she took.
Thanks Mom.

----- Reineking, Amelia (8 SEP 1909)
Last Wednesday afternoon, at six oclock, the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Reineking on the West Side (Clark Co., Wis.), was the scene of one of the most beautiful and largely attended weddings ever witnessed in this section of Clark County, when their daughter, Miss Amelia Reineking, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Alfred H. Decker of the Braun Settlement.
Promptly at six oclock the strain of the wedding march, ably played by Miss Meta Reineking, sister of the bride, floated as a buoyant medium through the home, giving the signal to the happy couple, who marched to the parlor escorted by the Misses Hilda Reineking and Augusta Schwarze, and the Messrs. Calvin Noah and Otto Tielen, and where the Rev. Otto Saewert performed a most beautiful and impressive ceremony.
The bride, with flushed cheeks and wearing a handsome wreath and vail, and gowned in pale blue, made an exceedingly pretty picture as she marched in company with the bridesmaids who were dressed in white.
After the ceremony a bountiful wedding feast was partaken of and the many toasts given to Mr. and Mrs. Decker spoke well of the esteem in which they were held by those present, as did also the many presents, which were many, both useful and ornamental, which they received. After the supper, the guests were entertained with music and singing until a late hour.
The groom has rented his fathers farm in the Braun Settlement and it is there that Mr. and Mrs. Decker will make their future home.
Miss Carrie Eifler, cousin of the groom, and Fredrick Helming, and daughter, an uncle of the bride, of Franklin, Sheboygan Co., were among the relatives present from a distance.
The bride and groom are both highly esteemed and popular young people throughout this section and to whom the heartiest congratulations are extended, to which is added that of the Gleaner.
