Dekker, Herman Adolph (b. 29 JAN 1833, d. 6 AUG 1913)
Note: Notes on Heinrich (Henry) Decker's Civil War Record (By Allan Wessel)
Henry Decker enlisted in the Union Army, August 21st, 1862 in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan Co. Wisconsin as a Private. He received $25.00 for volunteering. On October 25th, 1862 he was mustered into Company D, 27th Wisconsin Regiment at the age of 29.

On March 30th, 1863 he was sent to the hospital in Madison, WI. The rolls do not show when he returned to duty but the rolls for July and August show him Absent with out Leave since Aug 20, 1863 (in Wis). September and October roll corrected the Absent with out Leave when proper certificate was received by the Regiment. On November 5, 1863 he is listed as back on duty with transportation payment of $6.77. He is on duty until March 23, 1864 when the rolls list him as sick in
the General Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. On November 17, 1864 he is listed as "Sick" instead of "Absent Sick". On February 3, 1865 he is again listed Absent Sick at General Hospital, Little Rock Arkansas. He remained in the hospital until mustered out on June 16, 1865 by orders from the War Department.

The Buker transcription mentions that Mr. Buker's friend, Henry Decker entered the Union Army weighing over 200 pounds and when Henry was discharged he weighed about 125 pounds.

In 1884 Henry Decker applied for a pension due to a hernia received during the March from Sataria, Kentucky to Harris Bluff, Mississippi. From records received from the National Archives it appears that Henry Decker received from $6 to $12 per month under the Act of June 27, 1890. Under the Act of Februrary 6, 1907 the pension was increased to $20 per month and when he turned 75 the pension was increased to $30 per month.

Notes: Harvey Goeke may have found his bayonet, sheath and bullet pouch. The bayonet was behind the chinking of the logs of the old Decker house. This was the farm that Henry Decker cleared and lived on. When Henry Decker moved to the Greenwood area, he purchased the land now owned by Harvey Geoke and built a log home there.
Dennis Bolf has original picture of Heinrich Decker by himself and with his family.
Leondo Franz has a large framed certificate that was received by Henry Decker when he gave a donation for a Civil War Memorial that was to be built. The memorial was never completed and no one knows what happened to the money.

(Affidavidit to apply for Pension)
State of Wisconsin, County of Clark

On this 31 day of December AD 1880, personally appeared before me a Clerk of the Circuit Court in and for the County and State aforesaid Heinrich Decker who being duly sworn deposes and says he is now a resident of Greenwood in the County of Clark and State of Wisconsin and that he has so been since about the month of April 1870. That he is the identical Heinrich Decker who enlisted as a private in Co., "C" 27th Regt Wis. Vol Infny on the 21st day of August A.D. 1862 and whose application for Invalid Pension is numbered 304226. That afficant couldn't furnish medical testimony of his physical condition at and prior to his said enlistment, for the reason that he never had occasion to employ any physician nor ever had any medical involvment prior to his said enlistment, but that he had always been, prior and up to his said enlistment a sound healthy man, and continued to be and remains sound and healthy, with the exception of a slight attack of chronic diarrhaea, until on or about the month of June A.D. 1863 when afficant incurred the disability for which he claims a pension, to wit - a rupture in the right groin, which rupture is the result of a severe fall sustained by afficant while in the line of duty and without any improper conduct on his part - while on the march from Salartia to Haines Bluff in the State of Mississippi, not after the incurrence of said disability affiant was sent to Division Hospital, but that he received no treatment for said disability, except to apply for and receive from the Dispensary a truss, which affiant had adjusted to his disabled parts and continued to wear the same during the time he remained in said Division Hospital which was about one month, at which time affiant received a furlough to return to his home in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin for a period of Ninty Days, but that affiant was obliged on account of said disability and a slight attack of chronic Diarrhea tat the time to have said furlough extended for a period of nearly four months. Now at the time of affiants return to his said Regiment he was unfit for duty and did not therefore during his said lenght of service perform any but very light duty. Now after his discharge from the service and return home he was invalid for his said hernia from July 1865 to April 1870 by one Dr. Bodustab there a resident of the Town of Herman, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin at which time affiant removed to Clark County, Wisconsin. Now affiant is informed and beleives that the said Dr. Bodruslob is now dead. Now since affiant has resided in Clark Co. aforesaid, he has had more less treatment for his said disability that during the first three or four years after coming to Clark Co., affiant did not (illegible) the reach of any physician, but that since the year 1874 and up to the present time he has been treated by Dr. H. J. Thomon, a resident of Greenwood Clark Col, Wis, and whose affidavit is hencewith furnished.

Subscribed and sworn to before me the day and date above named and I certify that I have no interest in the prosecution of thes (illegible)

After his return from the war he was united in marriage to Sophia Schwarze in the year 1867.

In May of the year 1870 the family came to Clark County and settled on a farm about 3 miles west of Greenwood. On this farm they remained until 1902, when they moved to the Braun Settlement about 5 miles north of where by hard labor they built themseves a new home and it was here Mr. Decker passed to his reward.

His wife wife preceded him in death just one year ago, and since then he felt lonesone and had a longing for the final resting place.

He was taken sick with dropsy about 4 years ago and all that kind hands and medical skill could do, was done, but to no avail and he passed away Aug. 6, 1913, reaching the age of 78 years 6 months and 4 days.

The monument was to consist of three sides. Three pillars and three shields. The figure to the left of the shield is that of a soldier representing the land forces, the figure to the right is a sailor representing the navel forces.

The top left hand pillar is a statute of Columbia, The American Godess of Liberty. With one hand resting on the shield, while the other holds a sword. The top right figure represents history, illustrated by a woman with a book and a pen. The top of the middle, or back brace is a soldier posing in defense of the American Flag, the glourious Stars and Strips and directly beneath him on a coil around the pillar is engraved the name and date of the first and last battle of the war. Fort Sumter, 1861 and Appomattox, 1865. On top stands the American Eagle, the emblem of our country, in defense of the soldiers honerable discharge.

Decker, Otto (b. 19 JUL 1871, d. 29 OCT 1956)
Note: Family History of Otto Decker (From Debbie O'Conner)

Otto Decker, Sr. was born on July 19, 1871, in Sheybogan County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Friedrich Decker who was born in Lippe Detmold, Germany and Maria Meier who was also born in Germany. Otto (1871) had 5 brothers and 5 sisters: Augusta (1859), Frederic (1862), August (1863), Henry (1864), Herman (1869), Louisa (Kraatz) (1876), Bertha (Gehmke) (1873) and Ferdinand (1874), Emilie Magthalone (1880, died at 1 year), Emilie Albertina (Amelia Geisler, 1881). The first five were half siblings from Friedrich's first marriage to Wilhelmenia Teace (Diess).

Otto married Lydia Meier in Greenwood, Wisconsin at the Westside Reformed Church. The marriage was performed by J. Schmalz, Minister of the Gospel. The witnesses were August H. Meier, brother of Lydia, and Louisa Decker, sister of Otto.

On April 18, 1899 Otto bought his 80 acre farm for $450.00. Legal description of the farm was: the north 1/2 of the north east quarter of section 30, township twenty seven, North of range two west.

Otto and Lydia were the parents of 10 children, Friedrich, Theodore, Gilbert, Edan, Elsie, Leona, Dorothy, Eleanor, Arthur, and Otto. During his life time Otto senior worked as a dairy farmer, cheese maker, cook at a logging camp, and was town treasurer.

Lydia died at the age of 54 on July 8, 1936 of cardio vascular renal disease. Otto Sr. lived to be 85. He died of cerebral thrombosis after spending 30 days in a nursing home. They are both buried at the Westside Cemetery, Greenwood, Wisconsin.

It has been said that Lydia was a very religious women who was active in her church and at one time served as president of the Ladies' Aid Society. People have told that her house and table were open to anyone who came to her door. Even salesmen were invited in for a cup of coffee. Otto Sr. visited his son, Otto Jr., in Illinois. I was too young to remember but Otto's wife Shirley said Grandpa Decker would eat limberger cheese and onions on rye bread for his snack. As of 2000 all Otto and Lydias's children are deceased except Elsie who will be 96 on April 5, 2002.

My father, Otto Jr., always remembered Greenwood fondly. He attended the Decker school and graduated from the eighth grade. As a child he could speak German. He told of milking cows by hand before school in the morning and again in the evening. As ayoung man he drove a milk truck and worked as a cheese maker as well as working on the family farm. After his mother died he left the farm and moved to Belvideere, Illinois. On October 15, 1941 he was drafted into the Army and after basic training at Fort Bennings, Georgia he was shipped overseas on May 10, 1942. He was attached to the 4th tank battalion, First Armoured division. He landed in Northern Ireland. This was the first boatload of troops that was taken overseas on the Queen Mary. He participated in the Northern African and Italian campaigne through the duration of WWII. In 1950 he married Shirley Halter. They had five children and raised them on a farm near Marengo, Illinois. Otto Decker, Jr. died March 8, 1989 from cancer.
